Members of a small community in Southeastern Kentucky were well acquainted with feelings of peace and happiness in 1966. Many were poor in terms of worldly possessions, but rich in terms of love, peace, and happiness. That sense of peace and happiness was taken from them in the instant that it takes a driver to lose control of a car. Five boys (four Letcher High School students and one recent graduate) crashed into a bridge and careened into the dark waters below. The resulting scene has been described as what one might imagine seeing at the gates of Hell. The events of the night were described by some as a nightmare from which they kept waiting to awaken. They didn't awaken, though, and the trauma would impact five families, their friends, and their community members, as well as future generations for decades to come.
